About us — The Team

Ciara Tinkler MRCVS

Ciara (pronounced kee-ra) is the principal Veterinary Surgeon and practice owner. She graduated from The University of Edinburgh in 2004. After working in the UK for a few years she moved back to the island and took over at Strand Vets from Richard Thorpe MRCVS in 2009. She can be found in the practice on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and all day on Friday, where she enjoys both small and large animal work. Ciara is also a qualified veterinary acupuncture practitioner, so can help our patients with pain. At home Ciara has a cat called Prudence, a dog called Maddie and a little boy to fill her “spare” time, she hopes one day to have time to get back on her motorbike again!

Fern Hopkinson MRCVS

Fern is one of our Veterinary Surgeons, she joined the team in July 2015 after graduating from the University of Nottingham. She enjoys working with all creatures from our smallest to our largest patients. In her spare time Fern has thrown herself into all sorts of activities including music, scouting, scuba diving, gardening and Manx dancing and can be found dashing round the south in her spare time! At home she has two cats, Nancy and Flora, who like it when she has time for snuggles.

Gemma Harland RVN

Gemma is one of our friendly RVN’s (that’s Registered Veterinary Nurse to the rest of us). She got her nursing qualification in 2007 but has been working with animals for 16 years! You will see Gemma around the practice helping our vets, running nurse clinics, monitoring our anaesthetics and spoiling our inpatients rotten. Gemma also has a physiotherapy diploma, so we often rely on her to help our patients who have mobility problems. At home Gemma has a dog called Bam and a ginger horse called Stella. In her limited spare time Gemma enjoys mountain biking, caring for Stella and walking Bam along the beach.
Gemma is currently enjoying some time at home whilst she takes maternity leave.

Amy Hooper RVN

Amy is our full time RVN, she joined the practice in 2016 after moving to the island from the North-east of England. She qualified in 2014 and has been working full time since. Amy is great at helping our pets shed extra pounds and is always up for a snuggle or a fuss. She shares her home with two naughty cats, Tom and Jingle, they are always up to mischief and we love to hear their antics. Outside of work Amy loves music, walking and fitness and is enjoying exploring the island.

Lorna Kennedy RVN

Lorna is one of our super RVN’s she qualified in 2010 and joined us here in 2014. Lorna is great at physiotherapy and enjoys helping our patients find their feet again. At home Lorna has a little boy and her spaniel Bobby, the three of them can often be found heading out into the hills on adventures together.

Clare Williams

Clare has been with our practice for over 10 years, she came to the island to study marine biology and hasn’t gone home yet! Clare has fulfilled a few roles in the practice but is now studying for her Veterinary Care Assistant qualification, meaning she spends time looking after our patients. Clare is a Mum of two and aspires to one day help with animal rescue efforts abroad. She can often be found caring for our inpatients and making sure they get all the treats and cuddles they need.

Geoff Tinkler

Geoff is one of our receptionists and seems to pick up all the other little bits that everyone else overlooks! He currently splits his time between South east England and the Isle of Man. His other persona is as a member of the band Scarlett Parade, and he is often gigging or recording at locations all over the place. Outside of music Geoff enjoys playing sports, particularly tennis and football.

Jacqueline Sloane

Jacquie is one of our reception team and is one of the people who will welcome you when you arrive and chat to you on the phone. She splits her time between working here and looking after the Island’s animals as a pet sitter and walker. At home Jacquie has a small menagerie including her two beagles, Bree and Bailey, and her two tortoises Harley and Mavis.
